If soil becomes saturated, the weather service issues a warning. Hillside properties in the San Francisco Bay Area and elsewhere may be prone to damage from landslides. Geologists are studying the warning signs and progress of local landslides to help reduce risks and give people adequate warnings of these looming threats.

Separation occurs along discontinuities such as fractures, joints, and bedding planes, and movement occurs by free-fall, bouncing, and rolling. Falls are strongly influenced by gravity, mechanical weathering, and the presence of interstitial water.
Added water creates natural hazards produced by gravity figure 5. On hillsides with soils rich in clay, little rain, and not much vegetation to hold the soil in place, a time of high precipitation will create a mudflow. Mudflows follow river channels, washing out bridges, trees, and homes that are in their path. A lahar is mudflow that flows down a composite volcano figure 6. Ash mixes with snow and ice melted by the eruption to produce hot, fast-moving flows.
The lahar caused by the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz in Columbia in killed more than 23, people. Less dramatic types of downslope movement move earth materials slowly down a hillside.

Soil creep Soil creep is a process operating at the granular scale. Landslide Landslides arise when rocks and unconsolidated material on the cliff face are saturated with water rain or wave-splash. Rotational slumping With rotational slumping, heavy rain is absorbed by unconsolidated material making up the cliff often glacial till, or boulder clay.
Mudflows Mudflows occur on very steep slopes along the coastline. Our subjects Our Subjects. In Britain this is often due to freeze thaw weathering. Where rocks are laid down in beds that slope dip down towards the sea whole layers can slide down slope along a slide plane.
This is where saturated soil and weak rock flows down a slope and produces a lobe - sometimes called a solifluction lobe. Cliff collapse Cliffs collapse for a number of reasons, including the rate and type of weathering acting upon the front edge of the cliff or the cliff face, and the rate and type of erosion occurring at the cliff base.
