The developer also layered in quality gameplay and in-depth options across the various modes, providing a foundation that EA rode for the next few years to great success.

That said, really embraced the fun of the series with Madden Cards. Essentially, these let you turn on different cheats in-game or unlock historic players in your Franchise save. Madden Cards stuck around for a few years before being phased out for good, which is a shame. The Xbox version cut several of the best features as the developer had to learn how to harness the new technology. Even at the time, the mode was astoundingly more in-depth than its modern-day counterparts, like QB1 and Face of the Franchise.

However, we see this as the genesis of everything that made Madden great because it was the first year the series added Franchise Mode. This was also arguably the deepest Superstar Mode has ever been, making for an all-around great experience. The popular Truck Stick was made even more deadly with the Highlight Stick, giving more agile players an added sense of shiftiness.

Madden 07 is just a complete package from top to bottom. When it comes to the very best of the Madden series, two games clearly stand above the crowd.

Updated on July 3rd, by Kevin Pantoja: Considering Madden's history as arguably the most iconic sports gaming franchise ever, it has had some fantastic entries over the years. Although many longtime fans might agree that the quality has dipped in recent years, those installments have still been met with solid reviews, especially on Metacritic , helping to find the best Madden game.

Right off the bat, Madden NFL 18 stood out because of its cover. Tom Brady graced it and to play off of that, they offered up a "G. Edition" that gave players early access. In a notable addition to the series, this was the first installment to feature the Frostbite engine that is stilled used today. This game also marked the debut of the Longshot mode, which let you control a quarterback as he went through high school, college, the combine, and eventually the NFL.

Some reviewers considered it to be a great addition but some thought it was something of a disappointment. A year before Brady was on the cover, his teammate Rob Gronkowski was given the honor. By this point, those who had been playing the game for over a decade had noticed that things weren't changing all that much in terms of gameplay. So, EA Sports looked to make a few alterations to improve things, including adding the ground game mechanism to balance things out.

They also made franchise mode a bit deeper and worked on the defensive side of things. On the flip side, commentary and presentation missed the mark. There are a few historic caveats regarding this game, including it being the final Madden released on the Wii and the only one for the Wii U and PlayStation Vita.

As soon as it was booted up, some fans were upset as the popular EA Trax was gone, meaning there wasn't any licensed music. Instead, the menus were filled with instrumentals and it turned away fans. However, the gameplay was seen as solid and a true highlight was the Connected Careers mode that let players combine Franchise and Superstar mode into one place if they wanted. Following the aforementioned removal of EA Trax, it took the game three years to reintroduce it. Songs returned in Madden NFL 16 but there was still an option to go with what the composer put together if that's what the gamer wanted instead.

In terms of the actual gameplay, not all that much had changed but a larger focus was put on the passing mechanics. The game also took advantage of the popularity of fantasy football with the Draft Champions mode, combining fantasy elements with on-the-field action.

There were still attempts to innovate the series when Madden NFL 11 hit the shelves. One way this installment did that was to include GameFlow and was done to speed up the time each game took.
