Besides quizzes, worksheets, and tests, you can evaluate projects, writing assignments, journal entries, oral book reports, presentations, performance assessments high school labs , skits, and so on. When I write both my unit plans and my weekly lesson plans, I highlight in yellow any assignment to be given that week which will generate a grade.
That way I can see at a glance whether or not I have at least two grades per week. Be careful not to be overly enthusiastic and collect every single paper you assign. It doesn't matter if you don't have a homework grade section on your report card, you can tell them that it will make a difference with their grade. If the homework has to do with math or reading or spelling, etc They always make a gasping sound and they know it is serious work and they can't mess around.
I use that for regular assignments that they are concentrating on, or things that seem like unimportant work, but it would work great for homework until they realized that it is a big deal to do it. If we want best practices in assessment to become normative, we need to empower teachers with professional development on these best practices and allow control over the grade book to determine how many marks should go in the grade book. An arbitrary number is not going to support student achievement and teacher practice; focus on a best practice is. Instead of focusing on quantity of assessments, let's focus on quality of assessment practices.
